#DearMe - Youtubers Celebrate International Women's Day

Did You Know They Were Scientists?

Here are some women who you may not have known were scienctists that have done some very awesome things in their fields.

  • Rosalind Franklin - A British chemist integral in the discovery the structure of DNA, through her breakthrough in the use of X-ray diffraction to study DNA fibers. Her research and study were distrubted without her knowledge or approval among her male counterparts, Dr. James Watson and Dr. Francis Crick, who took Franklin's research (without attribution) to publish their own DNA model, for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1963.
  • Annie Jump Cannon - A pioneering astronomer responsible for mapping and classifying hundreds of thousands of stars in the known universe, whose work was integral in the development of the contemporary stellar classification schema, the Harvard Classification Scheme, the still-prefered method of stellar classification and organisation based upon star temperature.
  • Ada Lovelace - A mathematician, and the daughter of well known poet Lord Byron, whose equations and research are credited to be the first computer program written down, in the 1800s.
  • Mae C. Jemison - The phyicist and bio-medical engineer, she was the first African-American woman to be admitted to NASA's astronaut training program, and the first African-American women in space.
  • Hedy Lamarr - Often primarly remembered for her career in Hollywood as an actress, Hedy Lamarr also worked to develop the "Secret Communications System" used duing WWII to counteract the Nazis, by forming unbreakable codes that prevented classified information from being intercepted. While the patent for this method of "frequency hopping" was successfully filed in her name, it was met with opposition by the US Navy and not adopted during the war. However, the work done by Lamarr in the field of long range communication is the basis our current spread-spectrum communication, and is the reason we now have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
  • Mayim Bialik - Currently well known for her role in the presently popular TV sitcom The Big Bang Theory, she has a PhD. in neuroscience and is active as an advocate for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.
  • Natalie Portman - A well known actress from such movies as Black Swan, the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and Garden State, she also has her degree in psychology from Harvard and has lectured at Columbia regarding terrorism and counter-terrorism tactics and policies.
